Director of Finance
Position Description 
The Director of Finance is the chief administrator of all financial operations at Messiah Church. This person works cooperatively with Pastors, Servant Steering Team, financial volunteers, and Messiah staff.
 
Key Functions & Roles:
Payroll & Benefits
  • Administer all aspects of payroll operation for staff and contractors, including proper with-holdings for benefits and taxes, IRS and MN Department of Revenue compliance reports, etc. 
  • Maintain records and provide year-end tax information for state reporting, staff, and contractors. 
  • Manage and coordinate employee benefits, including PTO, health insurance, and retirement. 
  • Complete new employee on-boarding enrollment in payroll and benefits programs.

Giving
  • Oversee Financial Secretary and Counting Team, ensuring best practices are followed.  
  • Develop and maintain policies around the handling of finances.  
  • Oversee giving statements of donors, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality.  
  • Answer questions from donors and offer guidance on ways to give.  
  • Participate in financial development initiatives, such as stewardship and capitol campaigns, ensuring accurate recording of pledges and funds received.  
  • Manage and track donations and prepare quarterly giving statements. 
 
Accounting & Bookkeeping
  • Chief administrator of Messiah financial operations.  
  • Manage and reconcile all Messiah Church bank accounts, brokerage accounts, credit cards, etc.  
  • Complete daily, month-end, and year-end accounting and bookkeeping tasks.  
    • Provide reports to: Pastors, Finance Reps, Program Directors, and Ministry Teams.  
    • Include insights on any significant financial impacts. 
    • Communicate to appropriate team when special gifts are received. 
  • Pay all invoices and operation costs incurred by Messiah Church.  
  • Process vendor invoices through approval and payment, including proper budget coding. 
  • Ensure proper internal controls and audit trails regarding financial transactions.  
  • Prepare Annual Reports as required by the Minnesota Annual Conference office. 
  • Execute financial decisions made by Servant Steering Team.  
 
Budget Management
  • Prepare yearly budget in collaboration with Pastors and Finance Team.  
  • Maintain chart of accounts and administer operating budget and manage general ledger. 
 
Accounting Software
  • Maintain accounting software (Quickbooks Online) and integrations with online giving platform (Subsplash) and church management system (Planning Center). 
  • Train and support volunteers in use of accounting system.  
 
Compliance
  • Stay up to date on federal or state requirements impacting accounting and payroll.  
  • Responsible for proper withholding and reporting of federal, state, and local taxes as required by law. 
  • Process year-end earnings statements for W-2 and 1099 employees. 
  • Maintain compliance of federal, state, or Annual Conference requirements for employers. 


Qualifications
  • Degree in accounting or related field. 
  • 3+ years experience working as financial manager or related role. Experience with nonprofits or churches preferred.  
  • Demonstrate competency with processing payroll, developing budgets, and basic accounting activities.  
  • Knowledge of Quickbooks Online accounting software or aptitude and willingness to learn.

Supervision
  • Director of Finance oversees volunteer teams including Financial Secretary, counters, and check signers. 
  • Works in coordination with Servant Steering Team and Pastors. 
  • This position reports to the Associate Pastor. 
 

Compensation, Schedule & Benefits
  • The Director of Finance is an exempt, part-time position (10-12 hours/week).  
  • Benefits include a flexible schedule with paid time off.   
  • Hours are flexible with strong preference for onsite office hours on Tuesday mornings.  
  • Compensation range: $20,000-$28,000
