Service, Study and Fellowship: Our Track Record

The Young Adult Community has been gathering since July 2007. Since then, we have had some fun times and gotten to know some great people.

Over the past several months ...
  • In September, a group of us went to Emma Norton Services in St. Paul to have pizza and play Bingo with the residents there.
  • “Faith and Film,” a documentary and discussion group, gathered once a week in October at the Binnies’ house. We had fun and learned a lot as we viewed Jesus Camp, God Grew Tired of Us, For the Bible Tells Me So, and Expelled.
  • In October, participants of The Young Adult Community went on our first young adult mission trip—a weekend spent doing flood relief work in Cedar Rapids, IA. We had a FABULOUS time!
  • In November, Carrie offered a class on “Prayer” during the second service (9:45 am-10:45 am) on Sunday mornings.
  • In November and December, several of us read the bestselling novel, The Shack, by William Young, and formed an intergenerational book discussion group.
  • We closed out 2008 with a morning of volunteering at the Operation Christmas Child warehouse (where we completed the initial check of hundreds of shoeboxes filled with Christmas presents for children), before relaxing over some Tex-Mex at Chili’s.
  • In October, we traveled to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to help with flood relief there.
  • In September, we traveled to Rich Harvest and baked muffins that we served later in the month.
  • In July, 2007, we got to know one another over some good ‘BBQ!'
  • In August, 2007, several young adults met for an afternoon/evening at “the great Minnesota get together.”
  • We spent an afternoon checking and packing gift-filled shoe boxes at a Twin Cities Operation Christmas Child warehouse. The shoe boxes were then sent to the Baltic States and given to children who would otherwise not have received any Christmas presents.
  • We gathered at the Brave New Workshop, a great comedy club in Uptown.
  • A group of us gathered on Wednesday nights in October, November and December for theological discussion around Rob Bell’s well-known book, Velvet Elvis: Repainting the Christian Faith.
  • Some of us spent an afternoon doing clean-up volunteer work at Emma’s Place, one of the many services offered by Emma Norton Services. Emma’s Place, located in Maplewood, offers permanent, affordable housing for homeless, low-income families.
  • We kicked off a Young Adult Dinner Groups - We gathered for a meal catered by Buca di Beppo, found out who was in each of the five Young Adult Dinner Groups, and enjoyed our evening with old and new friends.
  • This spring, several people met weekly for discussion around Brian McLaren’s book, A New Kind of Christian
  • In February, about twenty of us gathered for the first-ever Young Adult Academy Awards Party! There was a bit of friendly competition brewing around who could predict the greatest number of Oscar winners, and our winner (who happened to be the pastor’s husband) received a large chocolate Oscar (wrapped in gold foil, of course).
  • A bunch of us met one Saturday evening in May at Buffalo Wild Wings, before heading to Feed My Starving Children (Chanhassen location). Altogether, the volunteers at FMSC packaged 15,984 meals consisting of soy, vitamins, rice, and dehydrated vegetables, that night—enough to feed 44 children for a year!
  • We met at Let’s Dish! to prepare meals that we took home, froze, and have been enjoying whenever we’ve wanted them! In less than two hours, we were able to prepare 5 meals that serve 4-6 people each. We chose the meals we wanted to make online beforehand, and arrived at the store to find our ingredients completely prepped and ready for us to work with.
  • We attended "The Church Basement Roadshow: A Rollin’ Gospel Revival" (a tour hitting 32 U.S. cities this summer) at Solomon’s Porch in July to hear Tony Jones, Doug Pagitt, and Mark Scandrette, leaders at the forefront of the Emergent Movement, as they spoke about "rethinking church and Christianity for a globalized world."
  • The Binnies invited everyone over for a Housewarming Party in August. We relaxed in their backyard with grilled eats on a warm, summer evening. After dinner, we went inside and watched and discussed the critically acclaimed documentary, Darfur Now, an official selection of the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival.
