Young Adults PDF Print E-mail
Who, exactly, IS a “Young Adult?”
People who are in their 20s or 30s (or in a relationship with someone who is). As soon as you graduate from high school, you are welcome to join 20/30 Vision (even though you may not be 20 years old).

We gather throughout the year for study, fellowship, and mission/outreach events. From a night at the comedy club to a Saturday of volunteering, this group is always eager to try new things and welcome new people. Our future goals include the formation of a worship experience geared toward young adults. Interested? Join us! Contact Diane Balagna for more information and/or to get involved.

Do you like working with elementary-age kids? Are you looking to volunteer?
Consider signing up to be a Homework Helper!
CONECT, a division of Interfaith Outreach & Community Partners (IOCP), hosts a Homework Club twice/week at Plymouth Colony (about 1-2 blocks from Messiah UMC). Persons interested are asked to volunteer one night/week or once every-other-week on either a Monday or a Wednesday evening, from 4:30-6:30 pm. If you would like to sign up or to receive more information, contact Kimberly at the CONECT office or 612-309-3133.

Caring for Persons with AIDS
Are you interested in reaching out to your neighbors in South Minneapolis who have AIDS? If so, then you may want to consider signing up with other young adults from around the city who are helping to prepare, serve and share meals with AIDS patients.

Here's how it works: Clare Housing runs several houses and an apartment complexes in the Twin Cities that provide homes and care for persons with AIDS. Clare Housing welcomes volunteers who can offer to help the residents by preparing and then sharing a meal with them (most volunteers sign up for a once/month time slot). Each volunteer will then work with up to three other young adult volunteers from our group to prepare/purchase a meal and share the meal with four residents, a caregiver and yourselves. After the meal has been shared, the volunteers are finished (usually around 7 p.m.). Interested? Contact Diane for more information and/or to sign up.

The Young Adult Community partners with Light of Hope in Africa
The Young Adult Community has decided to sponsor Hannah Njoki, one of the girls living at Light of Hope in Kenya. Hannah, a 16-year-old, and her sister, Margaret, have been living at Light of Hope since May, 2006. Hannah dreams of one day becoming “a preacher of the gospel.”

Light of Hope provides a safe home for up to 80 girls in Karati, Kenya. Each of the girls there receives spiritual and emotional nurturing along with quality education and career development. Light of Hope promotes and develops growth and healing for each of its girls as they learn and develop the skills of successful and contributing members of society.

As an affiliate of Messiah United Methodist Church, you have the opportunity to contribute financially to the sponsorship of Hannah Njoki. Please consider making a donation (one time, monthly, quarterly, etc.) for the betterment of Hannah’s future. By becoming a generous friend of Lighthouse Ministries International (the organization responsible for funding the ministry of Light of Hope), you will be joining a family of caring individuals who are making a difference in Kenya. Because The Young Adult Community is providing monetary gifts for Hannah and the other young girls at Light of Hope, participants will have the opportunity to meet with the founders of Light of Hope twice a year. In addition, young adults will have the special opportunity to communicate with students and staff from Light of Hope on a fairly regular basis. Money given to this ministry will be used to provide food and water, healthcare, education and shelter for the girls at Light of Hope. Funds will also go toward facility maintenance, the funding of staff positions and animal/agricultural tending. All contributions to Light of Hope are 100% tax deductible.

If you’re interested in contributing to the sponsorship of Hannah and the ministry of Light of Hope, please contact Diane Balagna. Donations of any amount are greatly appreciated.
